Well we’ve come to the end of another year! Before I go on with any of the news for December, I wanted to firstly say that all of us at the store would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a safe and relaxing break with plenty of time for knitting or crochet! And secondly, I wanted to say that we really value your support and truely it brings us so much joy to do something so simple as connect with our lovely customers through our shared love of knitting. Thanks everyone for an awesome 2016!
Now on to business …
On Friday 16th we’re having a little Christmas party in-store from 11am til 2pm. There will be a quiz, prizes, tea/coffee and mince pies and if you wear a hand-knitted item we’ll give you 10% off your purchases on the day! We’ll draw the prizes at 2pm, if you’re not in the store then we’ll contact you by phone or email. It’s going to be fun – hope you can make it!
Christmas Gift Guide
We often get friends and family of knitters coming to buy yarn as a gift – which is a difficult thing to choose when you’re not a knitter yourself! So we’ve taken pity on them and put together a display on our main table of lovely gift ideas for knitters, including books, knitting bags and notions pouches, journals and shawl pins. You can view and download the list here if you want to come with a plan 🙂
Product of the Month
This month it’s Shibui Linen, which is a lovely crisp, chainette yarn. It has actually recently been discontinued but we still have good quantities in most colours (except Ash, that was super popular). We’ve made up three patterns in the shop in it, L.1, the striped scarf you can see in the picture below, Dangling Conversation, the blue shawlette below (which only takes 1 skein!) and the summer t-shirt Etch (not pictured) which is Cima and Linen held together.
Linen is usually $18 but for this month is $16.20.
Yarn News – Shilasdair break in production
We have just recently been informed by Tony from Shilasdair that he and Eva are selling the business to another local who is currently setting up their dye house. Unfortunately it will not be ready for some time – possibly a year. Tony is unable to keep up production until then so there will be a break in production. I wanted to let you all know in case you had been planning a project in their lovely yarn! We are low or out of some colours in both the DK and 4 ply but still have lots of other colours. Give us a call if you’d like us to check quantities for you.
And lastly, we’re taking a little break between Christmas and New Year’s. We’ll be closing at 4pm on Christmas eve and reopening on Tuesday January 3rd.
Looking forward to seeing you in 2017!!
Amy and the Sunspun team

We’re pretty excited about this coup! The gorgeous Anna is going to be in the store this Sunday 18th September to meet you lovely people! She’ll have copies of her book Penguin for sale, her garments from the book, including the awesome Humbolt sweater below, for you to see and will give a short talk at 11am! We’ll have tea and cakes on hand too. Come and join us, it’s sure to be a lovely morning (no RSVP necessary).
Well it certainly feels like winter is over! No doubt it will get cold again before it gets warmer but, like many Melbournites, we’ve been enjoying the lovely Spring weather we’re having and starting to plan our summer knitting schedule (every Melbournite does that, right?).
So, what’s on this month? Well it feels like it’s been a big month already! First, on Thursday 1st we had our first ever indie-dyer trunk show with Hannah from Circus Tonic Handmade which was great fun and a great success, we saw a lot of new faces in the store as fans of hers came to squish and buy her yarn in person. We know many people couldn’t make it this time but don’t worry, we have another in the works for later in the year – stay tuned for more details.
And to top off an already great day, Anna Maltz dropped in! We tried to play it cool but we, and a few customers, couldn’t help pinching ourselves!

Then on Friday we packed the car full of yarn and headed off to The Craft Sessions, and as always had a lovely time in the company of fellow makers, learnt new skills, made new friends (and embarrassingly a couple of us forgot our toothrushes).
For me, Friday started with a class on spoon carving (that’s carving a wooden spoon from a block of wood, not carving things with spoons as my mum thought) with Alichia from Hearth Collective. It was amazing and both very simple to do but also physically quite hard! My hands and forearms were sore the next day every time I gripped something, obviously knitting does not build up my arm muscles enough!
My little spoon, it’s about 10cm long
Then on Friday night we got a messages from people saying they had just seen Sunspun on Postcards (episode 30 is here if you want to see). This was filmed a few months ago and I’d forgotten what date it was going to air, so that was a funny surprise.
Me on TV!
On the Saturday afternoon we had a stall at the mini-market which was a roaring success, those ladies really love nice yarn, we had several customers come back a couple of times for more 🙂
Along side us at the market was Hannah from Circus Tonic Handmade and also Megan from Wooldays, their stalls seemed to always be teeming with customers too.

Sunday for me was a class on the Marlisle knitting technique from Anna Maltz which is used in her Humbolt jumper pattern. It was great to get to learn more about Anna and her technique – such a simple process but it has so many possibilities. Everyone came away from the class buzzing with ideas for applying it – I’ve got a few percolating in my head, hopefully they make it to my needles soon 🙂

So that’s what has already happened, now on to what is happening later this month, I think you’ll be pleased to hear it’s time for our …
