December Newsletter

Well we’ve come to the end of another year!  Before I go on with any of the news for December, I wanted to firstly say that all of us at the store would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a safe and relaxing break with plenty of time for knitting or crochet!  And secondly, I wanted to say that we really value your support and truely it brings us so much joy to do something so simple as connect with our lovely customers through our shared love of knitting.  Thanks everyone for an awesome 2016!

Now on to business …

Christmas Party

On Friday 16th we’re having a little Christmas party in-store from 11am til 2pm.  There will be a quiz, prizes, tea/coffee and mince pies and if you wear a hand-knitted item we’ll give you 10% off your purchases on the day!  We’ll draw the prizes at 2pm, if you’re not in the store then we’ll contact you by phone or email.  It’s going to be fun – hope you can make it!

Christmas Gift Guide

We often get friends and family of knitters coming to buy yarn as a gift – which is a difficult thing to choose when you’re not a knitter yourself!  So we’ve taken pity on them and put together a display on our main table of lovely gift ideas for knitters, including books, knitting bags and notions pouches, journals and shawl pins.  You can view and download the list here if you want to come with a plan 🙂

Product of the Month

This month it’s Shibui Linen, which is a lovely crisp, chainette yarn.  It has actually recently been discontinued but we still have good quantities in most colours (except Ash, that was super popular).  We’ve made up three patterns in the shop in it, L.1, the striped scarf you can see in the picture below, Dangling Conversation, the blue shawlette below (which only takes 1 skein!) and the summer t-shirt Etch (not pictured) which is Cima and Linen held together.

Linen is usually $18 but for this month is $16.20.

Yarn News – Shilasdair break in production

We have just recently been informed by Tony from Shilasdair that he and Eva are selling the business to another local who is currently setting up their dye house.  Unfortunately it will not be ready for some time – possibly a year.  Tony is unable to keep up production until then so there will be a break in production.  I wanted to let you all know in case you had been planning a project in their lovely yarn!  We are low or out of some colours in both the DK and 4 ply but still have lots of other colours.  Give us a call if you’d like us to check quantities for you.

Christmas Break

And lastly, we’re taking a little break between Christmas and New Year’s.  We’ll be closing at 4pm on Christmas eve and reopening on Tuesday January 3rd.

Looking forward to seeing you in 2017!!

Spring has sprung! September at Sunspun

Well it certainly feels like winter is over!  No doubt it will get cold again before it gets warmer but, like many Melbournites, we’ve been enjoying the lovely Spring weather we’re having and starting to plan our summer knitting schedule (every Melbournite does that, right?).

So, what’s on this month?  Well it feels like it’s been a big month already!  First, on Thursday 1st we had our first ever indie-dyer trunk show with Hannah from Circus Tonic Handmade which was great fun and a great success, we saw a lot of new faces in the store as fans of hers came to squish and buy her yarn in person.  We know many people couldn’t make it this time but don’t worry, we have another in the works for later in the year – stay tuned for more details.

And to top off an already great day, Anna Maltz dropped in!  We tried to play it cool but we, and a few customers, couldn’t help pinching ourselves!

Hannah and Anna

Then on Friday we packed the car full of yarn and headed off to The Craft Sessions, and as always had a lovely time in the company of fellow makers, learnt new skills, made new friends (and embarrassingly a couple of us forgot our toothrushes).

For me, Friday started with a class on spoon carving (that’s carving a wooden spoon from a block of wood, not carving things with spoons as my mum thought) with Alichia from Hearth Collective.  It was amazing and both very simple to do but also physically quite hard!  My hands and forearms were sore the next day every time I gripped something, obviously knitting does not build up my arm muscles enough!

My little spoon, it’s about 10cm long

Then on Friday night we got a messages from people saying they had just seen Sunspun on Postcards (episode 30 is here if you want to see).  This was filmed a few months ago and I’d forgotten what date it was going to air, so that was a funny surprise.

Me on TV!

On the Saturday afternoon we had a stall at the mini-market which was a roaring success, those ladies really love nice yarn, we had several customers come back a couple of times for more 🙂

Along side us at the market was Hannah from Circus Tonic Handmade and also Megan from Wooldays, their stalls seemed to always be teeming with customers too.

Megan from Wooldays

Sunday for me was a class on the Marlisle knitting technique from Anna Maltz which is used in her Humbolt jumper pattern.  It was great to get to learn more about Anna and her technique – such a simple process but it has so many possibilities.  Everyone came away from the class buzzing with ideas for applying it – I’ve got a few percolating in my head, hopefully they make it to my needles soon 🙂

August at Sunspun

August at Sunspun

Hi folks,

Well there’s only one more month of winter left, if (like me) you’ve started a project that you swore you’d wear this winter it’s time to get cracking!

Staff changes

We’ve had a few staff movements recently so I thought I’d update you on those.  Firstly, Nicole Beasley, who is our pregnant lass, is due in early September and is feeling mighty huge these days so she’s finishing up on this coming Saturday!  She’s been an organisational force in the store and has hardly slowed down during her pregnancy.  We’ll try to keep things tidy in her absence 🙂  If you want to keep in touch with her, she blogs here and Instagrams here

Secondly, Karen Pior has left Sunspun.  She was a great asset to the store wearing a number of hats, including managing most of our social media (you’ll have to make do with me now!) as well as teaching for us and helping many customers with their purchases and knitting conundrums.  We know you’ll all miss her, as will we.  You can keep in touch with Karen on her blog here and Instagram here

Lastly, we have a new employee Chelsea Holden.  Chelsea has come on board to be the store manager and will be in the store from Tuesday to Saturday.  We’ll do an interview with Chelsea on the blog soon so you can get to know her but in the meantime please do say hi and introduce yourself if you see her in store, she’s keen to get to know our regulars.  And I should also mention that she’s my sister!

Trunk Show

Our trunk show with Clare Devine kicked off on Friday evening with a special event for Sunspun members – a meet and greet and fashion parade!  I’d love to show you photos but my photo processing software has today decided that it doesn’t want to play nice!  I’ll have to leave you with one I took on my iPhone (trusty iPhone!).  Just imagine everyone enjoying tasty nibbles, Clare talking about her designs and inspiration and the Sunspun models (Chelsea, myself and my mum) doing our best to look elegant 🙂

The trunk show is on this week til 5pm on Friday.  We have 16 of Clare’s patterns on display and they are all on sale for $6 each during the trunk show.

We’re also hosting a giveaway of Clare’s booklet Neighbourhood Sheep Society Volume 1 on our Ravelry group Sunspun Fibre Folk, pop over to find out how to enter.

Product of the Month

Our Product of the Month for August is Lang Jawoll.  As usual it’s 10% off the regular price for the month, which makes it $9.90/ball.  We have a review on the blog and some suggestions of what you could make with this soft but hardy yarn.

New in Store

Late last month saw the arrival of three new yarns from The Fibre Company and they are ammmmaaazing!  We have all colours available in Terra, Acadia and Road to China Lightand coming later this month will be Road to China Lace.  We’ll do a blog post on these beautiful yarns soon too.  If you’re thinking of making Clare’s Snell cowl, Acadia would be perfect for it!

Left to right are Terra, Road to China Light and Acadia

Later this month we’ll be getting in a couple of new 5 ply yarns.  The first is Prima from Rosabella Threads.  We’re really excited about it!  It’s a blend of kid mohair from their farm, ethically sourced Thai silk and merino from NSW, dyed and spun on their antique machinery in Queensland.  We’ll have more info on it when it arrives.

The second yarn is Jo Sharp Mulberry Silk Georgette which is a gorgeous silk and merino blend with good pattern support too.

The Craft Sessions

It’s not this month but very early next month, 2nd-4th September, that The Craft Sessions is on again.  We’re very excited to once again be a sponsor, we’ll be including a little goodie in everyone’s gift bags which I think you’ll love.  I personally can’t wait to meet Anna Matlz and take her Marlisle class!  I’ll be instagramming during the event if you want to see what we’re all up to on the weekend.  We’ll also have a stall at the mini-market on the Saturday afternoon where we’ll have lots of lovely yarns for attendees to squish.

Classes this Month

Our classes for this month are going to be great.  My pick has to be the Fair Isle Knitting –Pawkies Mitts class, we have a sample of these beautiful mitts in the shop knit in our beautiful Orkney Angora Elsness and they are just so soft!  It’s a great class if you’ve been wanting to learn fair-isle/stranded knitting but haven’t yet taken the plunge 🙂
