We are super excited to announce the arrival of our newest yarn range, Isager Yarns! Developed by Marianne Isager, one of Denmark’s leading knitwear designers, this is a collection of yarns that blend beauty, durability and environmental cred and we love them for all these reasons.

With a background in design, Marianne has been involved in the design and production of knitwear for more than 30 years and her knowledge and experience working with colour and fibre is certainly visible in these yarns. They come in an extensive and very beautiful range of colours (Spinni and Tvinni in a whopping 49 shades and Alpaca 1, 2 and Highland in a still-impressive 20) and we noticed when unpacking them that they work together beautifully, no matter how what combination we put together. This means that, although the colours stand well individually, the range just begs to be knitted as stripes, colourwork and myriad other combinations… Many of the shades are heathered, adding a great depth of colour, while quite of few of Spinni and Tvinni are actually dyed over a base of grey yarn, something that is hardly ever seen in commercially-produced yarn and adds a whole new level of visual texture- you can see it in the salmon and yellow skeins below.

All the Isager yarns are made from pure natural fibres with minimal processing. While the two alpaca yarns and the Highland yarn are produced in Peru from locally-grown and processed fibre, Spinni and Tvinni are made from Danish fleece and are produced in Denmark, something that is as rare now as it is here in Australia. As Marianne writes, “We used to have many mills in Denmark, but now only two are left, and Skive yarn is the oldest with 150 years in the same family. I have worked with the mill since 1977 and had the Spinni and Tvinni specially made for Isager. It is expensive to produce yarns in Denmark, with all the environmental restrictions, but we like the yarns to be made under good conditions. Also the wool we use and the colors are best quality”.  So, while we very much look forward to working with more local yarn producers and dyers (watch this space for another exciting, local yarn arriving soon), we do feel very happy to support this enterprise… and there is just something so wonderful about Marianne’s colours that we couldn’t resist bringing them from the other side of the world!

Isager yarns are designed to be used on their own or held together to create thicker fabrics, making perfect use of the many colours that work so beautifully together. We will add to the range over time but we currently have:

Spinni:  A single-ply, laceweight yarn spun in Denmark from 100% Danish lambswool, Spinni has great structure and a crisp hand for garments and lace and combines well with Alpaca 1 or 2 for extra softness and drape. This yarn, and projects made from it, softens and blooms on blocking, resulting in a fabric that is durable but cushy too. Currently available as 100gm ($26) but soon as 50gm too.

Tvinni:  A light 4ply spun in Denmark from 100% Danish lambswool, Tvinni is made up of two plies which creates a springy, lightweught fabric for garments and homewares that combines well with Alpaca 1 or 2 for extra softness and drape, This yarn, and projects made from it, softens and blooms on blocking, resulting in a fabric that is durable but cushy too. Currently available as 100gm ($26) but soon as 50gm too.

Alpaca 1:  A fine laceweight yarn made from 100% Peruvian alpaca, Alpaca 1 has enough twist to avoid splitting but also to allow the natural softness and halo of alpaca to shine. The drape and softness of Alpaca 1 make it perfect for lace and accessories and it combines well with Spinni, Tvinni and Highland for garments and accessories. Available as 50gm balls for $13.

Alpaca 2: A light 4ply yarn made from 50% Peruvian alpaca and 50% highland yarn, Alpaca 2 has the qualities of both fibres, combining memory and body with softness and lustre. On it’s own, it works beautifully for accessories and babywear and combines well with Spinni, Tvinni and Highland for garments. Available as 50gm ball for $13.

Highland Wool:  A 4ply yarn made from Peruvian highland wool, Highland combines strength and softness perfectly for garments, homewares and accessories but also combines well with Alpaca 1 and 2 for extra softness. Available as 50gm ball for $11.

Marianne’s yarns were initially developed to support her knit design work, so it is no surprise that her books and leaflets are full of beautiful designs with her signature combination of colour and texture and sophisticated shaping and detailing. Many of her designs are only available in Danish but we have a series of books and leaflets for children and adults, which we’ll be adding to as more and more of her designs are translated into English.

After years of anticipation, we’re busy knitting our little hearts out and trying the various yarns-more on that very soon! We hope that all our lovely customers who have been so supportive of us bringing Marianne’s yarns and patterns into the shop are enjoying knitting with them too- do tell us what you think of it all!
